No Testing Required

Large joint injections do not require blood testing, alteration or discontinuation of any medication.  Procedures include; Arthrogram, therapeutic injection, or diagnostic arthrocentesis (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip).

Testing Required

For healthy patients not currently on Coumadin, Plavix, or Heparin, Jantoven, Eliquis, Brilinta, or Xarelto blood work is required within the last 30 days for interventional procedures. Patients may continue to take aspirin.

Interventional procedures include; Paracentesis, Thoracentesis, Lumbar Puncture, Myelogram, Epidural, Facet Injections.

Blood work (PT, PTT, INR, and Platelet count) is required on all patients with a history of liver disease, renal dialysis or a known bleeding disorder. Patients who meet these criteria must have blood work performed within 1 month of the procedure.

Blood work is also indicated for all patients scheduled for internal biopsies including; liver, lung, renal, abdominal and pelvic masses. If the patient has had blood work within 1 month it will be used and no further testing is needed.

Patients on Coumadin/Jantoven must discontinue use 5 days prior to examination and have a normal INR at the time of the procedure. Patients on Plavix should discontinue use 5 days prior to examination and do not require labs prior to the exam. Patients will only stop medication after consultation with referring physician.

Patients taking Eliquis must discontinue use at least 48 hours prior to examination. Patients taking Pradaxa must discontinue use at least 3-5 days prior to examination and will require a PTT prior to exam.

Patients taking Xarelto must discontinue use 24 hours prior to exam and no labs will be required.

All patients taking Eliquis, Pradaxa, or Xarelto will only stop medication after consultation with referring physician.
