SET UP:
Using sterile technique open urethral catheter tray. Drop catheter, gauze, and IV administration set on to tray. After putting sterile gloves on, empty contents of tray onto sterile drape. We do not use the betadine, tweezers or the gloves provided. Set these items to the side. In the small basin place the cotton balls. Set the large basin on the right side of the sterile field with the cotton ball basin next to them on the left. The drape to cover the patient will be in the middle of the sterile drape. On the left side of sterile drape place the 4×4 gauze. Empty the packet of sterile lube onto the gauze. Place the catheter next to the sterile lube. Attach the blue Christmas tree onto the IV tubing. Clamp off IV tubing. Open and spike one bottle of the Cysto Conray 43. Hang from an IV pole. Open Vent on IV tubing. Flush Cysto Conray through tubing. Reclamp tubing. Put 6ml Betasept and 100ml sterile water in basin. Have 5 pieces of silk tape on fluoro tower.
PROCEDURE:
Take patient history. Ask questions on contrast consent form and have parent sign giving us permission to proceed with procedure. PLACE LEAD MARKER. Take a scout image. Inform Radiologist of the procedure and show them the scout. The nurse will catheterize the patient. Radiologist will come in. The Radiologist will tell the tech when to open the clamp on the IV tubing. After the procedure instruct the patient, and parents, to drink plenty of fluids to flush the contrast out.
